Fandom: Star Wars (Expanded Universe)
Bio (full of spoilers for the Thrawn trilogy, "Sleight of Hand," and By the Emperor's Hand): As a child, Mara was taken from her parents and trained in the use of the Force by Emperor Palpatine. She was given the position of Emperor’s Hand, an elite operative chosen and trained by the Emperor to carry out his will. Like most of Palpatine’s other Hands, Mara believed herself to be the sole Emperor’s Hand.
After the battle between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker at Cloud City, during which Vader offered to form an alliance with Skywalker in order to overthrow the Emperor, Palpatine sent Mara to Tatooine to kill Skywalker and thus eliminate the immediate threat of Vader’s betrayal. Mara infiltrated Jabba the Hutt’s palace as a dancer and was present when Skywalker arrived to rescue his companions, but was mistaken for a conspirator against Jabba and was unable to successfully complete her mission.
Mara was one of the few Hands strong enough in the Force to not only be able to communicate with the Emperor across the galaxy, but also to be able to receive orders – effectively compulsions – from him. When Palaptine died, he left Mara with a final order: to avenge his death by killing Luke Skywalker.
With the Emperor’s death, Mara lost her position and all of the privileges and luxuries that went along with it. For several years, she survived by taking on whatever odd jobs were available. Palpatine’s death also caused Mara to lose conscious control of her Force powers. They would reappear at random intervals, and would often result in the need for Mara to find a new job.
Four and a half years after the Battle of Endor and Palpatine’s death, Mara saved Talon Karrde, a major player in the smuggling business, from an ambush, thus gaining his favor. Karrde offered Mara a place in his organization and, five and a half months later, expressed his intention to groom her as his second in command.
Shortly after this pronouncement, Mara’s Force sensitivity led her to bring Karrde’s freighter out of hyperspace exactly where Skywalker happened to be stranded in his damaged X-wing. Karrde brought Skywalker aboard with the intention of either turning him over to the remnants of the Empire for their offered bounty or extracting money from the New Republic for his safe return.
After the freighter returned to Karrde’s base, Skywalker escaped in a stolen Skipray and Mara gave chase. During the pursuit, both vehicles crashed and Mara lost consciousness. When Mara regained consciousness, she was in Luceti.
